WORKING GERMAN SHEPHERD BREEDER

About Harthe Berg

Welcome to all visiting my website. My name is Jarosław Ptak and I have been a breeder since 2012. We specialize in breeding working dogs. The breeding establishment is called Harthe Berg after the nearby peak. It is the German name for the current summit of Kozie Chrzepty (peaks), which is 492 metres above sea level.

About the breed

German Shepherds are a type of shepherd dogs and guard dogs trained for guiding and protecting herds of animals [often sheep] as well as protecting human property. These dogs are watchful, easy

to train, tenacious, and resistant to harsh living conditions.

The formal history of the German Shepherd as we know it today begins in the nineteenth century. In 1871, Max von Stephanitz, a Prussian nobleman thought to be the breed's founder, began breeding

these adaptable dogs on purpose. These are the breed standards:

  • for dogs 60/65 cm at the withers, weight 30 to 40 kg,
  • for females 55/60 cm at the withers, weight 22 to 32 kg

German Shepherds come in two types, long-haired and short-haired. There are currently working lines and show lines of German Shepherds being bred.

The German Shepherd is the only breed of dog that can be utilised for so many different purposes and duties. The German Shepherd is known as the leading “service dog” worldwide for a reason.

Working German Shepherd

From its ancestors from these breeding lines, the working German Shepherd inherited a very good general health, good mentality, temper, readiness to cooperate with humans, and work engagement in

general and specialised training. Professional breeding allows for dogs with a good mentality, a willingness to work with humans, and a proclivity for nose and guard work.

This breed is made up of two types: show type and working type. A show dog's build differs from that of a working dog. Show dogs have a sloping back while working dogs (original) have a straight dorsal line.

Working dogs today look a lot like German Shepherds from a century ago. They are more agile and healthier than their show line counterparts.

They have a great mentality, self-confidence, a balanced personality, and work engagement in specialised and general training, as well as later in performed tasks. The most common ones are sable or black dogs, but also black and tan. Working dogs are most typically the ones used to track

and catch criminals, search for drugs and explosives, and save people from rubble and avalanches, but they can also be used as therapy dogs and guard dogs, and compete in Schutzhunds. The mental and physical characteristics of the German Shepherd make it a nearly perfect dog.
